Black Cherry

(Rum Cherry or Wild Black Cherry) (Prunus Seroiina)

The Black Cherry tree grows differently depending on where it is located. In open, well-drained fields it has low branches and a crooked trunk. In a dry forest setting it has a straight trunk and high branches. It grows best in rich, deep moist soil but can be found growing in a variety of different soils. It is a fast growing tree and can grow to be 80 feet tall. The bark looks like burnt potato chips, with dense foliage of green lustrous leaves that turn yellow to red in the fall. In late May there are clusters of single white flowers that produce purplish black cherries in August. The fruit of this tree is used in making cherry liqueurs. The tree is highly prized in furniture making and can also be used as excellent firewood.  The leaves and twigs of this tree are poisonous to browsing livestock.
